Google Cloud's overarching goal of delivering sustainable, digital transformation for European organization will be met as per Europe's terms! After a discussion with the policy makers and customers, Google unveils ways to make it happen.

Cloud computing is globally recognized as the single most effective, agile and scalable path to digitally transform and drive value creation. It has been a critical catalyst for growth, allowing private organizations and governments to support consumers and citizens alike, delivering services quickly without prohibitive capital investment. European organizations—in both the public and private sectors—want a provider to deliver a cloud on their terms, one that meets their requirements for security, privacy, and digital sovereignty, without compromising on functionality or innovation.

Last year, we set out an ambitious vision of sovereignty along three distinct pillars: data sovereignty (including control over encryption and data access), operational sovereignty (visibility and control over provider operations), and software sovereignty (providing the ability to run and move cloud workloads without being locked-in to a particular provider, including in extraordinary situations such as stressed exits). After extensive dialogue with customers and policymakers, we are today unveiling ‘Cloud. On Europe’s Terms’. As part of  this initiative, we will continue to demonstrate our commitment to deliver cloud services that provide the highest levels of digital sovereignty, all while enabling the next wave of growth and transformation for Europe’s businesses and organizations.

Google Cloud’s baseline controls and security features offer strong protections, meet current robust security and privacy requirements, and address many customer needs. Yet each country in Europe has its own characteristics and expectations. Certain customers in Europe may require more flexibility than current public and private cloud offerings may provide. We want to deliver a platform that allows customers to deploy workloads with the desired local control, without losing the transformational benefits of the public cloud.

We are now delivering on this new vision collaboratively with trusted local technology providers in Europe, starting with T-Systems in Germany. Today, together with T-Systems, we announced a partnership to build a Sovereign Cloud offering in Germany for private and public sector organizations. The offering will become available in mid 2022 with additional features being added over time.  

In this new joint offering, T-Systems will manage sovereignty controls and measures, including encryption and identity management of the Google Cloud Platform. In addition, as part of their offering, T-Systems will operate and independently control key parts of the Google Cloud infrastructure for T-Systems Sovereign Cloud customers in Germany.

We are committed to building trust with European governments and enterprises with a cloud that meets their digital sovereignty, sustainability and economic objectives. We are starting with T-Systems today and will continue by partnering with trusted technology providers in selected markets across the region. 

Customers in other markets across Europe will be able to use these trusted partner offerings or use Google Cloud’s controls to exercise autonomous control over data access and use; exercise choice over the infrastructure that is used to process that data; and avoid cloud vendor lock-in. 

With Google Cloud, our customers also automatically benefit from sustainable business transformation on the cleanest cloud in the industry. Today, we are the largest annual corporate purchaser of renewable energy globally, and by 2030, we aim to operate entirely on 24/7 carbon-free energy in all of our cloud regions worldwide. 

We’ll continue to listen to our customers and key stakeholders across Europe who are setting policy and helping shape requirements for customer control of data. Our goal is to make Google Cloud the best possible place for sustainable, digital transformation for European organizations on their terms—and there is much more to come.

Canadian ATB Financial's migration of SAP environs that managed its core banking, financial services, payment engine and CRM data to Google Cloud and BigQuery helped them realize business outcomes in millions!

When ATB Financial decided to migrate its vast SAP landscape to the cloud, the primary goal was to focus on things that matter to customers as opposed to IT infrastructure. Based in Alberta, Canada, ATB Financial serves over 800,000 customers through hundreds of branches as well as digital banking options. To keep pace with competition from large banks and FinTech startups and to meet the increasing 24/7 demands of customers, digital transformation was a must. To support this new mandate, in 2019, ATB migrated its extensive SAP backbone to Google Cloud. In addition to SAP S/4 HANA, ATB runs SAP financial services, core banking, payment engine, CRM and business warehouse on Google Cloud. 

In parallel, changes were needed to ATB’s legacy data platform. The platform had stability and reliability issues and also suffered from a lack of historical data governance. Analytics processes were ad hoc and manual. The legacy data environment was also not set up to tackle future business requirements that come with a high dependency on real-time data analysis and insights.

After evaluating several potential solutions, ATB chose BigQuery as a serverless data warehouse and data lake for its next-generation, cloud-native architecture. “BigQuery is a core component of what we call our data exposure enablement platform, or DEEP,” explains Dan Semmens, Head of Data and AI at ATB Financial. According to Semmens, DEEP consists of four pillars, all of which depend on Google Cloud and BigQuery to be successful:

  1. Real-time data acquisition: ATB uses BigQuery throughout its data pipeline, starting with sourcing, processing, and preparation, moving along to storage and organization, then discovery and access, and finally consumption and servicing. So far, ATB has ingested and classified 80% of its core SAP banking data as well as data from a number of its third-party partners, such as its treasury and cash management platform provider, its credit card provider, and its call center software. 
  2. Data enrichment: Before migrating to Google Cloud, ATB managed a number of disconnected technologies that made data consolidation difficult. The legacy environment could handle only structured data, whereas Google Cloud and BigQuery lets the bank incorporate unstructured data sets, including sensor data, social network activity, voice, text, and images. ATB’s data enrichment program has enabled more than 160 of the bank’s top-priority insights running on BigQuery, including credit health decision models, financial reporting, and forecasting, as well as operational reporting for departments across the organization. Jobs such as marketing campaigns and month-end processes that used to take five to eight hours now run in seconds, saving over CA$2.24 million in productivity. 
  3. Self-service analytics: Data for self-service reporting, dashboarding, and visualization is now available for ATB’s 400+ business users and data analysts. Previously, bringing data and analytics to the business users who needed it while ensuring security was burdensome for IT, fraught with recurrent data preparation and other highly manual elements. Now, ATB automates much of its data protection and governance controls through the entire data lifecycle management process. Data access is not only open to more team members but it is faster and easier to acquire without compromising security. And it’s not just raw data that users can access. ATB uses BigQuery to define its enterprise data models and create what it calls its data service layer to make it easier for team members to visualize their data.
  4. AI-assisted analytics and automation: Through Google Cloud and BigQuery, ATB has been able to publish data and ML models that provide alerts and notifications via APIs to customer service agents. These real-time recommendations allow customer service agents to provide more tailored service with contextualized advice and suggested new services. So far, the company has deployed more than 40 ML models to generate over 20,000 AI-assisted conversations per month. Thanks to improved customer advocacy and less churn, the bank has realized more than CA$4 million in operating revenue. During the ongoing COVID crisis, the system was also able to predict when business and personal banking customers were experiencing financial distress so that a relationship manager could proactively reach out to offer support, such as payment deferral or loan restructuring. The AI tools provided by BigQuery are also helping ATB detect fraud that previously evaded rules-based fraud detection by using broader sets of timely and accurate data. 

Thanks to the speed and ease of moving data from SAP to BigQuery, ATB is using artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to do things it previously hadn’t thought possible, including sophisticated fraud prevention models, product recommendations, and enriched CRM data that improves the customer experience. 

Using the power of Google Cloud and BigQuery, ATB Financial has been able to draw more value from its SAP data while lowering cost and improving security and reliability. Speed to provide data sets and insights to internal team members has improved 30%. The bank also has seen a 15x reduction in performance incidents while improving data governance and security. Dan Semmens projects that the digital transformation strategy built on Google Cloud and BigQuery has both saved millions compared to its on-premises environment and has also realized millions in new business opportunities. 

Semmens is looking toward the future that includes initiatives like Open Banking and greater ability to provide real time personalized advice for customers to drive revenue growth. “We see our data platform as foundational to ATB’s 10-year strategy,” he says. “The work we’ve undertaken over the past 18 months has enabled critical functionality for that future.”

Israeli Government Chooses Google Cloud to Power its Cloud-based ‘Project Nimbus’

The Israeli government chose Google cloud to start a four-phased 'Project Nimbus'. Explore how the new agreement to deliver cloud services will help transform Israel's public sector, including healthcare, transportation and education.

Google Cloud today announced that it has been selected by the Israeli government to provide public cloud services to help address the country’s challenges within the public sector, including in healthcare, transportation, and education. 

Following a thorough public tender process, Google Cloud was selected for this four-phase project known as “Project Nimbus.” The agreement will deliver cloud services to all government entities from across the state, including ministries, authorities, and government-owned companies. The agreement is also available for higher education, health maintenance organizations and municipalities. The project will run for an initial period of 7 years, and the Israeli government may extend the engagement for up to 23 years in total. 

As part of the agreement, Google Cloud will work with the public sector on the formulation of best practices for cloud migration, integration and migration to the cloud, and optimisation of cloud services. Google Cloud will also provide training to the country’s technical government employees and senior leaders to enhance digital skills. Google Cloud announced last month that it will open a Google Cloud region in Israel to make it easier for customers to serve their own users faster, more reliably and securely. The region in Israel will be available to serve not only the government and related entities but also private commercial companies, just like any other Google Cloud region. 

The Accountant General of Israel, Mr. Yali Rothenberg, congratulates Google on their winning bid in the first tender of “Project Nimbus”, a multi-year flagship project led by the Israeli Government Procurement Administration, that is intended to provide a comprehensive framework for the provision of cloud services to the Government of Israel.

Like countless other industries, farming is going digital and undergoing big changes—driven by access to more actionable information. The agriculture business can now gather and analyze georeferenced data from satellites, combined with data from IoT sensors in fields, crop rotation and yield histories, weather patterns, seed genotypes and soil composition to help increase the quantity and quality of crops.

This is essential for businesses in the agriculture industry, but it’s also critical to address growing food shortages around the world. 

At S4, we create technology to de-risk crop production. We provide customers seeking agricultural risk management solutions with the tools to make better, data-driven decisions for their crop planning, based on machine learning and proprietary algorithms.

We interpret plant evolution on a global scale with predictive modeling and analytics, and offer super-efficient risk-transferring solutions. Our multi-cloud platform includes a petabyte-scale database, an open source stack, and—after 50 proof-of-concept evaluations—BigQuery for our data warehouse and the Cloud SQL database service to handle OLTP queries to our PostgreSQL database.

These PoCs included, among others, Microsoft Azure Data Lake Analytics, IBM Netezza, Postgres/PostGIS running on IBM bare-metal servers with SATA SSDs and on Google’s Compute Engine with NVMe disks, and on-premises memSQL, CitusData and Yandex ClickHouse. 

Weeding out risk in an uncertain market

According to recent research, climate extreme events like drought, heat waves, and heavy precipitation are responsible for 18-43% of global variation in crop yields for maize, spring wheat, rice, and soybeans. This is a clear trend for other crops as well. Such variation poses risks of food shortages as well as large financial risks to farmers, insurers, and regions dependent on successful crop yields. Also, it creates vast humanitarian difficulties.

Our mission at S4 is to help de-risk crop production by matching the right data with analytics tools so farmers and other participants in the agricultural value chain can plan better, resulting in more reliable food supplies.

In a nutshell, we create indices out of biological assets. These indices measure yield losses on crops that are caused by the effects of weather and other factors, which are then used as underlying assets for products, such as swap/derivative contracts and parametric insurance policies, to transfer risk to the financial markets.

We enable insurers and lenders to buy and sell agricultural risks through the futures market. Also, our other products help farmers and seed and fertilizer companies provide customized genotype recommendations and fertilization requirements. This helps to optimize planting by geography, resources, and crop species, monitor phenological, pests and humidity evolution throughout the crop season, and estimate yields.

Local communities benefit from S4’s technology, as the ability to manage weather risks allows farmers to stabilize their cash flows, invest more to produce more with fewer risks, and develop in a more sustainable manner.

Growing data sources, reducing costs, accelerating performance

With the volume of diverse data sources and analytical complexity both growing at a very fast pace, we decided that using a major cloud services provider with a broad roadmap and global partnerships would be beneficial to S4’s future evolution.

At the same time, we wanted to bring our services to users faster and cut costs by consolidating our on-premises technology stack. When we started evaluating providers, our leading criteria included a powerful geospatial database and data analytics tools along with excellent support, all at a competitive price. GCP prevailed in nearly all criteria categories among the 50 companies we measured. 

Our previous platform architecture included a hybrid relational database that used Compute Engine for virtual machines and Cloud Storage for database backup. The RDBMS was slow. Maintaining our own data warehouse was complex and expensive.

We wanted to use machine learning and neural networks, but couldn’t do so easily and affordably. The complexity of that system meant that products or services requiring small changes or additions to the data model translated to expensive expansions of infrastructure or project time.

Also, agronomical or product teams couldn’t test these changes by themselves, always requiring the intervention on no small part of the IT team, which led to further delays.

We added GCP services like BigQuery as S4’s cloud data warehouse and use BigQuery GIS for geospatial analysis, Cloud Dataflow for simplified stream and batch data processing, and Cloud SQL for queries to the S4 database platform, which have all made a huge impact on our services and bottom line.

Database and analytics costs have decreased by 40% and customers are receiving our analytical results 25% faster. In addition, we’ve eliminated the time-consuming downloading of images, reducing storage and processing costs by 80%, because we no longer need expensive tools licenses, and have greatly reduced classification processing times.

Our customers working in the agriculture industry are also benefiting from this infrastructure change. They are now able to speed up their data analytics using our GCP-based platform.

“S4 products and technologies unlock the full potential of satellite imagery for crop prescriptions, monitoring and yield estimates,” says Nicolás Loria, Manager of Marketing Services, Southern Cone, Corteva Agriscience.

“We’ve worked with S4 for the last three (and starting year number four) crop seasons as its team capabilities, data integration capacities, and analytics insights have allowed Corteva to perform an entire new solution. Thanks to S4’s customized 360° approach, fast response and delivery times, we have safely outsourced our remote crop analytic technical needs.”

Also, this new architecture has allowed us to scale our models and databases with almost no limits, at a fraction of the cost vs. the previous models.

We’ve saved a lot of time on executing processes and reduced work needed by our internal teams to do certain tasks, like preparing images, converting them, validating results, and more. Using Google Earth Engine has decreased the execution time of daily tasks anywhere from 50% to 90% of the previous time, going from an average time of 30 minutes to between four and 15 minutes, depending on the task.

In addition to saving money and time, we are able to focus on innovation with the GCP performance and features we’re using. We’re able to seamlessly add satellite data to analytics using both public datasets and our own private data, and deliver GIS data management, analytics, crop classification and monitoring in real time.

We can do semi-automatic crop classification and classification using spectral signatures with Google Earth Engine. Later this year, we’ll be using neural networks for pattern recognition and machine learning in new applications to improve crop yields and fine-tune risk models. And using GCP and Google Earth Engine infrastructure means we can run models for customers in South America and around the world, since Google Earth Engine has global satellite imagery available. 

We’ve heard from our customer Indigo Argentina that they’re able to bring customers data insights faster.

“We are working with S4 in the development of two different applications for satellite crop monitoring and yield assessment,” says Carlos Becco, CEO, Indigo Argentina. “S4’s technology allowed us to manage and analyze multiple sources and layers of information in real time, letting us uncover valuable insights in Indigo’s own microbiome technologies, and at a very competitive cost.” 

Analytical products and app development thrive with GCP

With GCP, we are updating and improving algorithms that we built manually with machine learning processes to develop drought indices for upcoming crop seasons. Algorithms can recognize specific phases of crop phenology (e.g., bud burst, flowering, fruiting, leaf fall) and correlate them with photosynthetic activity, light, water, temperature, radiation, and plant genetics factors. Other analytical products like crop monitoring, pre-planting recommendations, financial scoring, and yield estimation can now do a lot more for users by offering multiple layers and datasets, faster image processing, and real-time access via APIs.

We also replaced our bare-metal S4 app deployment with the App Engine serverless application platform. It provides tighter integration between the S4 platform and our BigQuery data warehouse for integration with marketplaces and third-party solutions.

We get all of these Google Cloud features with all the benefits of managed cloud services, from multiversioning and security to automatic backups and high availability.
