At our scale, it’s paramount that we retain a seamless user experience across all of the videos hosted, shared, and viewed on our platform. With managed database services from Google Cloud, we’ve been able to deliver a consistent and reliable user experience no matter where our users and their audiences are.

Outgrowing the data center and gaining more scale

Our first exposure to Google Cloud was the excellent performance between Google Compute Engine (GCE) and Google Cloud Storage (GCS), which we used to design a really high quality playback and upload environment for our customers’ videos. At first we were simply creating cloud-based packaging and delivery of their content, but the bulk of our application ran on an on-premises MySQL database. Seeing the gains from our initial investment in GCE and GCS, we decided to fully migrate to Google Cloud. 

We started by lifting and shifting our workloads from our on-premises deployments to GCE. But we quickly realized we had to redesign our application to deliver higher availability and responsiveness for an exceptional user experience, which led us to Cloud Spanner, a distributed SQL database management and storage service. With Spanner, we found all the benefits of a relational semantics database with global scale, allowing us to add more nodes with the push of a button. 

Today we have a multi-region instance with 99.999% uptime, so we’re confident it can handle our video workloads. We use about 16 Spanner nodes to cover approximately 50.8 billion rows and about 4.5 terabytes of storage/disk space. And with the launch of Video Library, we have the scale we need to fundamentally change the way organizations handle content. 

Using Spanner as a time machine during migration

During the initial migration, we wanted to ensure an accurate data transfer with as few errors or bugs as possible. When we moved data from MySQL tables into Spanner, we ran spot analyses to check for potential problems. If the data didn’t match, Spanner allowed us to revert to the original in a single click. Through Spanner we could check stale timestamps or past users. It almost functioned like a time machine by offering point-in-time recovery functionality.

Serving up any video at any time

We work with a long tail of content. Depending on how popular a video is, we take a different approach to storing it. We cache the most popular material so it’s immediately accessible and use Cloud Spanner to ensure it’s highly available across multiple regions. On the flip side, we use Cloud SQL for some lower volume satellite services that support other components of the application that don’t require the same guarantees or performance that Cloud Spanner provides.  

As our millions of users continue to upload their own videos, Spanner also acts as a video metadata indexing and cataloging service. When we need to play back a particular video, we can quickly and easily find it in a sea of content. It’s crucial that our database is highly available and reliable so the playback experience is seamless for our users.

What’s holding back innovation?

Costly clinical trials: The process of trialing and developing new drugs and devices is still long and costly, with more than 1 in 5 clinical trials failing due to a lack of funding.1 The high failure rate comes as no surprise when you consider the average clinical trial costs $19 million and takes 10-15 years (through all 3 phases) to be approved.2

Stringent security requirements: Pre-clinical R&D and clinical trials use large volumes of highly sensitive patient data – making the life sciences industry one of the top sectors targeted by hackers.3 On top of this, the FDA and other regulatory bodies have strict requirements for medical device cybersecurity.

Unpredictable supply chains: Global supply chains are becoming increasingly complex and unpredictable. This can be brought on by anything from supply shortages, to geo-political events, and even bad weather. Making things worse is the lack of visibility into medical shipment disruptions – so when disaster strikes you’re often caught off guard.

  • Accelerate clinical trials to deliver life-saving treatments faster and at less cost. Clinical trials require relevant and equitable patient cohorts that can produce clinically valid data. How that patient data is collected is also important. Collection in a physician’s office captures a snapshot of the participant’s data at one point in time and doesn’t necessarily account for daily lifestyle variables. Fitbit, used in more than 1,500 published studies–more than any other wearable device–can enrich clinical trial endpoints with new insights from longitudinal lifestyle data, which can help improve patient retention and compliance with study protocols. TapClicks is a smart marketing cloud, powered by data, that unifies our customer’s marketing. By choosing to migrate our core applications last year to Google Cloud, we cut costs, solved data-sharing concerns for our customers, and opened our stack up to a new ecosystem of possibilities. 

The core problem that we’re solving for our customers is how to manage their marketing infrastructures data and operations. Life isn’t easy for marketers now. There are 7,000 different vendors servicing this space today – creating much complexity between digital agencies, media, and brands. Marketers face challenges in navigating all of these systems, logging in and out, understanding pacing goals, and managing the flow of marketing data so they can analyze and report internally as well as to their clients at scale.

We unify omnichannel campaign data (250 API connectors and 6000 Smart Connectors ™ ) from a plethora of marketing sources on an automated data warehousing solution, creating simplicity for organizations. Over 4,000 agencies, media companies, and brands use our Marketing Operations and Data Management Platform, which imports data at scale and creates an automatic data warehouse on Google Cloud. Teams can also leverage TapClicks, like our world class Facebook connector, to import data directly into Google Data Studios.  Beyond importing and storing, we also provide data exporting to other Google solutions like Google Data Studio and Google Sheets.  We also create interactive dashboards that let stakeholders and clients analyze their data, as well as automated, multi-channel reports that go out to clients at specified times. So channel comparisons, optimizations, attribution, and calculations are easily performed.  Some of our customers are able to generate hundreds of thousands of individual reports and dashboards for their clients.

Although we may be best known for our reporting and analytics, we also empower teams managing the marketing operations workflow from customers and internal stakeholders, especially at scale. Our user-friendly, configurable system helps manage their orders and campaigns. Through automation of this process, we deliver tremendous amounts of efficiency, time saving, cost savings, and reduction of errors. The combination of these solutions makes up our unified platform, with additional capabilities like marketing intelligence that offers competitive and brand-level analysis. This is a disruptive solution in use by all leading media companies, agencies and many brands.

Partnering for possibilities

We faced a few challenges with our original tech stack, which included a mix of the leader in web services revenue, leaders in high performance data warehousing, as well as vendors on bare metal servers. 

  • One challenge was around costs, which were growing. 
  • Second, many of our customers work with multiple brands, and are very hesitant to share their data with the leader in web services, who’s often viewed as their competitor. 
  • Third, these vendors are more focused on their own revenue rather than a true long term partnership that would enable their customers to enjoy similar success as they have experienced.

When looking at other cloud providers, Google Cloud emerged for us as the front runner. They were competitive on costs, and their native Kubernetes support was superior— a big selling point for our DevOps team. There’s also a movement in the marketing and advertising industry away from AWS toward Google Cloud because of the data-sharing concern. Finally, most of our customers are already using Google Cloud tools, so there’s brand recognition and familiarity there, and easier integrations with their own systems.

Migrating to Google Cloud

Our migration, which took about five months, involved moving a significant chunk of our infrastructure, including our core applications, using Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE). In our legacy architecture, each of our clients was assigned to one of our virtual machines (VMs), and there was a lot of unused capacity because we had to provision for the max usage. We appreciated GKE’s cloud native capabilities, especially autoscaling, a huge benefit for our web application. We have varying usage patterns during the day, and though our application is mostly used during business hours, there are also days in the month of higher usage, and autoscaling saves us time and costs. GKE also makes deployments much easier, and we anticipate a lot of benefits there for our developer environments. We’ve moved some of our microservices into GKE and plan to move more in the future. All in all, we were able to migrate our core products and the bulk of our AWS spend successfully to Google Cloud. 

We also moved from our other vendors Relational Database Service (RDS) to running MySQL on our own VMs on Google Cloud, which gives us more flexibility in terms of settings and fine tuning. We’re still trying to find the best mix as we’re modernizing our infrastructure, and we took this opportunity to migrate from MySQL 5.7 to 8.0.  

Our next stage is exploring more of the capabilities and services of Google Cloud, including BigQuery, which we’re considering for our own data warehouse. The fact that we could also run Snowflake on Google Cloud, if needed, was another selling point for our migration. 

We’re especially interested in BigQuery ML’s machine learning and natural language processing capabilities, which enabled better predictive insights. Our customers want insights from their campaigns— which are working, which are paying off, where should they invest next? Using our platform, they’re looking not only to generate reporting, but also identify opportunities to improve campaign performance. We plan to use AI and ML to improve those capabilities, so that our customers can seamlessly unlock insight and intelligence from their marketing data and campaigns.

Double-clicking on Google Cloud

For us, being able to deeply leverage and partner with Google Cloud to deliver those solutions on a single stack is critical, and we think our customers will love it. We see TapClicks and Google Cloud partnering at a level beyond what you typically see in a cloud provider relationship. Already, fifty percent of our company is working with various Google Cloud solutions, and we envision TapClicks and Google Cloud as extensions of each other, providing a single, powerful platform solution. 

Google Cloud understands the partnership concept, and their team was able to shine a light on their services and what they could bring to the table. Compared to our previous experiences, dealing with the Google Cloud team has been a true pleasure. Now that we’ve migrated, we’re ready to take our next steps into the services available to us in the Google Cloud ecosystem, and the problems we’ll continue to solve for our customers. Cloud Bigtable brings database stability and performance to Precognitive

Precognitive develops technology to interpret data to improve the accuracy of fraud detection and prevention, to reduce false positives and customer disruption. Read how the quest for the right database led them to Cloud Bigtable.

At Precognitive, we were able to start with a blank technology slate to support our fraud detection software products. When we started building the initial version of our platform in 2017, we had some decisions to make: What coding language to use? What cloud infrastructure provider to choose? What database to use? The majority of the decisions were straightforward, but we struggled to decide upon a database. We had plenty of collective experience with relational databases, but not with a wide-column database like Cloud Bigtable—which we knew we’d need to scale our behavior and device workloads. At launch, our products were supported by a self-managed database, but we quickly migrated to Cloud Bigtable, and we love it.  

To efficiently support our bursty, real-time fraud detection workloads, we needed a cloud database that could satisfy the following key requirements:

  • Stability to keep up with increased adoption of our products
  • Intelligent scaling that avoids bottlenecks
  • Native integrations with BigQuery and Cloud Dataproc
  • Managed services that free up our engineers’ time to work on our products

Adding Cloud Bigtable as our performance database

As we scaled our services and added customers, our data collection services for our Device Intelligence and Behavioral Analytics products were seeing thousands of events per second. Cloud Bigtable provided a stable managed database that could handle the volume we were receiving during peak hours. We weren’t always able to handle this scale, as an early version of our product utilized a self-managed database.

Every month, two or three engineers spent hours managing the database instances. Whenever the instances crashed, it would cost at least one engineer a day or two of productivity attempting to restore the instances and recovering any data from our backup database. Managing this database internally was taking precious time away from product development.

We circled back to Cloud Bigtable. After two weeks of R&D, we decided to switch the Device Intelligence and Behavioral Analytics services to Cloud Bigtable.

Cloud Bigtable solved our scaling issues. Cloud Bigtable had been attractive to us from the start because it was fully managed, and offered regional replication and other features we were lacking in our own managed instances. Cloud Bigtable provides horizontal scaling and automatically rebalances row keys (equivalent to a shard key) over time to prevent “hot” nodes. In addition, Cloud Bigtable provides a connector to BigQuery and Cloud Dataproc that allows us to analyze the terabytes of data we are processing and use that data for unsupervised machine learning.

The perks of using Cloud Bigtable

After the migration to Cloud Bigtable, we noticed a number of additional benefits: improved I/O performance, a significant cost reduction, and a sizable decrease in hours spent on database maintenance.

We measured some of our typical metrics before and after implementing Cloud Bigtable. Our request latency dropped by about 30 ms on average (to sub-10 ms) for API requests. Prior to the change, we were seeing latencies of 40+ ms on average. This latency drop on our Behavioral Analytics and Device Intelligence products allowed us to trim about an additional 10 to 15 ms off our average response time across all dependent services.

Before we moved to Cloud Bigtable, we had to scale our database instances every time a new customer was onboarded. We were over-scaling in an attempt to avoid constantly resizing our database servers. By sunsetting our self-managed database and switching to Cloud Bigtable, we cut database infrastructure costs by approximately 35% and can now scale as needed, with a couple of clicks, during onboarding.

We have spent zero hours managing a Cloud Bigtable database since launch, and we put the time we are saving every month toward product development.

Moving forward with Cloud Bigtable

As an engineering team, we love working with Cloud Bigtable. We are not only seeing improved developer experience and reduced latency, which keeps the engineers happy, but also reduced costs, which keeps the business happy. We’re able to build more product, too, with the time we’ve saved by switching to Cloud Bigtable.
