In order to be successful, research needs to be replicable, so scientists can build on past work and insights. However, an article in Nature warned that as much as 50% of published drug development research could not be reproduced in subsequent trials. As a result, promising drug candidates sometimes led to disappointment, as well as wasted time and money, when key findings could not be replicated.
The shift to cloud computing helps solve this problem because it allows researchers to use open-source tools that work across platforms. As demand for cloud computing rises, our customers have asked us for more ready-made solutions to assure reproducibility of results by their collaborators, regardless of the platform they are using. They asked for secure and effective collaboration tools as well as faster time-to-insight from any type of data.
We listened. Google’s new research and data insights solution includes three sets of functionalities to address these key challenges. Each can be activated on demand and may be eligible for subscription pricing. “HPC in a box” offers abstract complexity to run high performance computing (HPC) workloads by automatically managing your cluster in the most effective manner. It integrates seamlessly with some of the industry’s most-used schedulers like Slurm and PBS. It makes it easier than ever to answer bigger questions faster by accessing Google’s fast, powerful hardware like TPUs and GPUs, all for one predictable flat fee for eligible workloads. Healthcare Innovation Hub provides healthcare-specific functionality to help ingest, aggregate, and de-identify any type of healthcare data in its original format. It unlocks cross-modality analysis and collaboration and empowers researchers with harmonization tools to overcome healthcare interoperability issues. Google Cloud Real-World Insights (formerly FDA MyStudies) accelerates and streamlines drug development and clinical trials to address urgent medical challenges with reproducible results.
The solution enables researchers to ask new questions, get answers more quickly, and work more collaboratively–with no wait times or down times. Institutions can scale to more ambitious projects and generate actionable, real-time insights from any data source–all while staying within budget.
Many top research centers have already found it faster and more cost effective to shift from downloading and storing data on their own servers to storing and analyzing data on Google Cloud. Here are some of the real-world projects already yielding breakthroughs:
- Clemson analyzed 8,500 hours of traffic camera feeds with 2.1M vCPUs in three hours to improve evacuation routes for disaster planning.
- The Colorado Center for Personalized Medicine saved $2.9M by building their Compass data warehouse on Google Cloud rather than on on-prem.
- The Broad Institute slashed costs of genomic sequencing by 90% with Google Cloud.

That’s just one of the many ideas folks at Purplle.com came up with to improve the buying experience of Indian consumers.
And without the power of Google Cloud, it would probably have remained just that…an idea.
But today, thanks to Google Cloud, “Nothing seems impossible,” says Suyash Katyayani, CTO, Purplle.
Purplle.com is an online e-commerce company in India and one of the pioneers in creating a digitally-native beauty brands in India.
“The beauty industry is so data intensive that we needed to have a strong data strategy and we were looking out for solutions which would enable us to have a strong data pipeline and a strong data warehousing solution,” says Katyayani.
That’s when it turned to Google Cloud.
Additionally, Purplle.com, says Katyayani, does not have to worry about at what scale the company operates at because they have access to state-of-the-art infrastructure from Google Cloud available to them so that their developers can run experiments.
“The biggest plus point for us has been the agility that Google Cloud has added,” says Katyayani.
Kohl’s Leverages Google Cloud Platform for Omnichannel Retail

Kohl’s is an omnichannel retailer focused on driving traffic, operational efficiency and delivering seamless omnichannel customer experiences.
Ratnakar Lavu is Kohl’s Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer. He, and Kohl’s, are at the forefront of retail technology innovation, focusing on a frictionless customer journey across digital, mobile and more than 1,150 stores.
As part of this journey to more closely unify its online and offline experiences for customers, the company was looking for supporting cloud services that would continue to drive best-in-class data center infrastructure; the ability to manage data at a very large scale; and industry leading analytics and machine learning tools to continually understand real time data streams and help personalize experiences for their customers.
Kohl’s recognized the opportunity to take on a cloud partner to help drive the improvement of the speed and reliability of their operations, while they focused on a number of innovations to deepen customer experiences.
“At the time, I was looking for an open and scalable platform to partner with our Kohl’s technology team as we transform our business by shifting to the cloud,” says Ratnakar.
“Google has great engineering talent as well as demonstrated experience solving stability and scale in its own Ads and Search business. At Kohl’s, we need to be bold and innovative in today’s retail environment, and therefore need partners who deeply understand how to manage risk.”
Kohl’s leveraged several capabilities of Google Cloud. For example:
- They built applications to automate deployment, scaling and operations.
- They used monitoring capabilities to monitor for things like response time.
- Scalable technology provided an infrastructure to elastically scale to site traffic.
- They ran their infrastructure across multiple regions for high availability.
In 2017 and 2018, record-setting numbers of customers visited Kohls.com during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend and the digital platform experienced high double-digit growth both years.
The capabilities provided by Google Cloud Platform (GCP) and Google’s data center infrastructure supported Kohl’s servers and systems during these key timeframes.
In addition, the Kohl’s team partnered together with Google’s core engineering team and services organization to optimize applications and make them more reliable.
Google Cloud’s Customer Reliability Engineers (CREs) worked with them in advance of their peak time frames to test the infrastructure for performance, scaling, and fault tolerance.
“Google CRE and services teams collaborated with us as we ran drills and exercises during each phase of preparation for peak time frames,” Ratnakar said. “As we continued to understand better how to scale, monitor, and support our applications in GCP and we are pleased that we worked with the CRE team as partners on monitoring services, alerting teams, and triaging work.”

Cloud Computing at Sea: Google Public Sector Boosts U.S. Navy Collaboration

With a global, always-on workforce, the U.S. Navy requires secure collaboration between teams across countries and time zones. This is especially relevant for the 50,000 U.S. Navy sailors deployed aboard approximately 100 ships at any given time, who need to connect with personnel at regional shipyards for everything from routine maintenance, to more serious ship repairs.
Google Public Sector directly assists Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA), the largest of the U.S. Navy’s five “systems commands,” by providing support to the U.S. Naval Ship Repair Facility and Japan Regional Maintenance Center (SRF-JRMC) in Yokosuka and Sasebo, Japan. NAVSEA is using Google Workspace, which harnesses Google’s threat protection and zero trust capabilities, to enable effective, secure, and compliant collaboration between the SRF-JRMC and Navy stakeholders around the world.
The workforce in the SRF-JRMC facility had two unique challenges. The first was around ineffective collaboration and communication channels. Before deploying Google Workspace, a Navy officer in Japan would need to be on-base to communicate over a secure connection, and calls were typically late at night given the time difference. This challenge was even further magnified when the COVID-19 pandemic hit, further restricting staff mobility.
The second challenge was a language barrier. With more than 3,000 Japanese Master Labor Contract (MLC) employees providing critical support to SRF-JRMC’s shipyard, Navy leadership needed an easier way to communicate with their Japanese-speaking counterparts. Breaking down this barrier would ensure work could be completed faster and more effectively, facilitating a more collaborative environment.
Enabling secure collaboration
The Navy partnered with Google Public Sector to enable Google Workspace for SRF-JRMC. Today, Google Workspace assists the Navy’s shipyards by enabling Google Voice for secure voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) calling options, so personnel can join calls and sessions on-site or at-home to communicate securely and reliably across continents. In addition, early access to solutions like English to Japanese translated captions in Google Meet help break down the language barrier by providing instant translation during meetings. The platform also saves the U.S. Navy thousands of dollars a month in phone bills by providing country-specific dial-in numbers for interviews.
Moreover, Google Workspace tools like Google Drive and Docs also help to simplify human resource workflows by streamlining the hiring for onboarding local Japanese employees for the shipyard. Having a shared Google Drive eliminates the need to send multiple files back and forth among the NAVSEA team, allowing them to minimize on-premises storage space. In addition, Google Docs enables Navy employees to communicate and collaborate with each other and with potential candidates securely, and across any device.
“As the largest overseas ship repair facility of the U.S. Navy, operational readiness and continuity of operations is our top priority,” said Peter Guo, chief information officer at SRF-JRMC. “Cloud collaboration capabilities provide us seamless and secure connectivity across continents and break down language barriers with our colleagues across the globe. We’ve improved our ability to operate anytime, and anywhere and have increased our ability to securely communicate and coordinate especially during network outages and natural disasters.”
Providing pandemic assistance
Google for Government’s Workspace solutions also became useful to the SRF-JRMC during the pandemic, providing valuable communication and collaboration tools during a time of uncertainty. In addition to deploying Google Workspace, SRF-JRMC’s IT department created a COVID-19 Pandemic Dashboard, a Google-based site that consolidated Japanese and international open-source data on COVID-19 outbreaks and provided updated guidance. The Dashboard was built in less than two hours, using Looker Studio, and it leveraged an automated data collection process to track local hospitalization numbers. Before building the site, it took the NAVSEA team hours to compile this information; now, the team can access this information in real-time.
“This Dashboard drastically reduced redundant weekly meetings centered on COVID-19 updates, and saved more than 10 hours per week manually gathering data and presenting it via slide decks,” said Guo. “Additionally, this capability enabled our leadership to make real-time, data-driven decisions and put necessary risk mitigations in place. It empowered supervisors across the shipyard to reference this website at any time and put additional health measures in place to minimize the transmission of COVID-19. Every minute counts at our two shipyards in Japan, so this made a tremendous impact on our operational efficiency and ensured the safety of our sailors.”
