Google Cloud transforms the future of business with digital transformation for three German retailers by migrating business-critical SAP systems to its highly scalable Cloud environment, reducing risk and downtime. Learn how.

The retail industry is rapidly evolving, with customers demanding exceptional digital experiences, and retailers adjusting their businesses to be more efficient. With many retailers relying on SAP for critical business functions like digital transactions, finance, supply chains and more, this shift has led them to look for ways to modernize these systems, deliver them on highly scalable infrastructure, and extract more value out of the data from within them.

I’m proud that we are helping German retailers successfully migrate business-critical SAP systems onto Google Cloud, minimizing risk and downtime and ultimately helping them build a foundation for future growth. Our work with retailers like Otto Group, one of the world’s largest ecommerce businesses, MediaMarktSaturn, the large consumer electronics retailer, and METRO, the wholesale retailer with operations across Europe, demonstrates our deep partnership with SAP to support customers’ digital transformations.

Helping Otto Group IT run SAP on secure, sustainable infrastructure

Otto Group, a leading online-retailer and services group in Germany and one of the world’s largest ecommerce companies, migrated their SAP workloads to Google Cloud in order to modernize their SAP landscape and build a more agile environment that would enable them to quickly scale up or down according to business needs.

The Otto Group, which consistently balances the sustainable use of resources and climate-neutral action with economic growth, is also able to leverage Google Cloud’s clean infrastructure to deliver the bulk of its internal SAP environment, ensuring the company’s business systems are running on secure, sustainable infrastructure. Since 2017, Google has matched 100% of its global electricity use with purchases of renewable energy every year, and is now building on that progress with a new goal of running entirely on carbon-free energy at all times by 2030.

With Google Cloud, Otto Group has told us they have access to better means of automation and improved network capability compared to what they had with their previous provider. Through this cloud migration, Otto Group IT is providing modern and flexibly scalable SAP systems to their internal customers.

Powering MediaMarktSaturn’s online ecommerce experience

For MediaMarktSaturn, SAP is critical to the smooth day-to-day running of its business, so the company was keen to ensure maximum availability and stability with a cloud environment. After a thorough examination of its business needs and hands-on support from Google Cloud’s teams, MediaMarktSaturn elected to migrate its SAP HANA database onto Google Cloud, enabling a performance increase of four times compared to its previous on-premises installations.

The SAP suite is critical for the ecommerce platform to run smoothly on a day-to-day basis. By migrating to Google Cloud, the retailer is providing even more support and maximum availability for its customers. With Google Cloud’s industry-specific expertise, MediaMarktSaturn’s customers have access to a reliable and stable ecommerce platform, so they can browse for products online from wherever they are.

Transforming METRO’s business by running SAP workloads in the cloud

With more than 97,000 employees in 34 countries, Germany’s METRO is one of the world’s largest B2B wholesalers. Previously, METRO relied on unique finance systems that were different in each country,  and updates or system testing required substantial coordination across numerous teams, which was both time-consuming and costly.

To address these pain points, METRO is moving away from on premise deployments and is now migrating its SAP S/4HANA finance systems to Google Cloud to support everything from classical role-based accounting to the use of cognitive tools. Now, internal METRO teams can work seamlessly across operations, enhancing the services they provide to customers by addressing demands in real time.

Google Cloud and LearningMate designed, Student Success Services closes the digital gap among students and helps them learn with intelligent, user-friendly and personalized experiences built on AI and analytics tools. Explore more!

A “one size fits all” approach to education no longer works in today’s classrooms. Using cloud-based technologies, schools and educators can take a more personalized approach to education–one that suits each student’s unique learning style, abilities, and needs.

Taking the lead toward more equitable educational opportunities worldwide, education technology pioneer, LearningMate, is partnering with Google Cloud to offer intelligent, personalized learning via Google Cloud’s Student Success Services.

In a student survey by EDUCAUSE, a nonprofit association whose mission is to advance higher education through the use of information technology, nearly all respondents asked for more digital learning and study options. Given a list of educational material types, such as study guides and recorded lessons, 93 percent said they would like to have online access to at least two options and more than half (56 percent) chose seven or more.

The trend towards student choice challenges educators to reconsider how they teach and support learners. Students expect the same qualities in their lessons as they encounter in their other, non-school related digital experiences: personalization; user-friendliness; and engagement. Educators who are used to a more top-down education model can struggle to meet these new expectations.

Google Cloud created Student Success Services to help education institutions meet learners where they are—in the digital age. This suite of tools and services uses Google’s advanced artificial intelligence (AI) and analytic tools to:

  • Engage with students via an AI-powered learning platform and interactive tutor
  • Help educators and learners collaborate more effectively
  • Provide current, actionable data on student progress

To bring our Student Success Services to more schools and organizations worldwide, we’re partnering with LearningMate — a global leader in digital learning infrastructure. LearningMate is a key go-to-market partner, helping schools design, launch, and maintain their own learning infrastructure. To start, LearningMate is adding Google’s AI-powered learning platform to its Frost platform, a popular content management for education.

As the education model continues to change and digital learning becomes the norm, disadvantaged students risk getting left behind. For these learners, the “digital divide” is very real, and stands to hinder them further–not only in school, but in society and the workplace in later life.

“The gap will only widen between those with digital advantages and those who struggle to gain access to devices and network necessities,” EDUCAUSE states. To meet all these challenges, schools need a diverse mix of tools, methods, and partnerships.

To help close the digital divide among students, digital tools need to be able to scale up or down so institutions and districts of any size and budget can use them. Google Cloud designed Student Success Services with this ability in mind. By offering these services, LearningMate aims to ensure that even schools with smaller teams and fewer resources can offer individualized learning experiences to their students.

With LearningMate and Google’s nearly 40 years of combined experience in education, this partnership aims to help educators better understand their students’ engagement, performance, and preferences. To learn more about Student Success Services and our collaboration with LearningMate, watch this session from our Government and Education Summit.

Cloud Firestore is a fast, fully managed, serverless, cloud-native NoSQL document database that simplifies storing, syncing, and querying data for your mobile, web, and IoT apps at global scale.

Its client libraries provide live synchronization and offline support, while its security features and integrations with Firebase and Google Cloud Platform (GCP) accelerate building truly serverless apps.

Here’s other stuff it’s good at:

Sync data across devices, on or offline

With Cloud Firestore, your applications can be updated in near real time when data on the back end changes. This is not only great for building collaborative multi-user mobile applications, but also means you can keep your data in sync with individual users who might want to use your app from multiple devices.

With Firebase Realtime Database, we felt we had built the best force-plate testing software on the market. Thanks to Cloud Firestore, in only two weeks, we built a system that’s significantly better and includes features we never thought possible to ship on Day 1.

Chris Wales, CTO, Hawkin Dynamics

Cloud Firestore has full offline support, so you can access and make changes to your data, and those changes will be synced to the cloud when the client comes back online. Built-in offline support leverages local cache to serve and store data, so your app remains responsive regardless of network latency or internet connectivity.

Simple and effortless

Cloud Firestore’s robust client libraries make it easy for you to update and receive new data while worrying less about establishing network connections or unforeseen race conditions. It can scale effortlessly as your app grows. Cloud Firestore allows you to run sophisticated queries against your data. This gives you more flexibility in the way you structure your data and can often mean that you have to do less filtering on the client, which keeps your network calls and data usage more efficient.

Enterprise-grade, scalable NoSQL

Cloud Firestore is a fast and fully managed NoSQL cloud database. It is built to scale and takes advantage of GCP’s powerful infrastructure, with automatic horizontal scaling in and out, in response to your application’s load. Security access controls for data are built in and enable you to handle data validation via a configuration language.

There are 2 Key Traits You Need to Battle the Slowdown. FM Logistic Know How to Enable Them

As companies move forward slowly to recover, many find that two key traits can help accelerate them: Openness and mobility. With over 26,000 employees worldwide, FM Logistic found a neat trick to enable it. And it did not take long to implement.

FM Logistic provides its international customers with complete logistics solutions that cover everything from warehousing and handling, to transport and distribution, co-packing and co-manufacturing, and supply chain optimization. Operating in 14 countries including France, Russia, Poland, India, Vietnam, Brazil, and China, FM Logistic supports its clients by offering specialized services across a number of markets including consumer goods, retail, cosmetics, and health.

“We are in the process of transforming all our tools and integrating new solutions to be able to work faster and more efficiently. Two main IT priorities are mobility and openness, in terms of working from anywhere and being able to interact with other information systems.”

– Communication Manager, FM Logistic

As a business that has existed since 1967 and in 2018 achieved a turnover of €1.178 billion with 9.5% annual growth, FM Logistic is always looking to help secure the company’s position within an evolving sector. To better serve its customers, FM Logistic decided to launch an innovation project in 2017 to transform the internal digital tools of the company and replace its intranet, email, and productivity software. The company looked for an integrated solution that would enable more collaborative ways of working and bring its international operations closer together. The company found that implementing G Suite and LumApps social intranet was the perfect combination.

“We are in the process of transforming all our tools and integrating new solutions to be able to work faster and more efficiently,” says the Communication Manager at FM Logistic. “Two main IT priorities are mobility and openness, in terms of working from anywhere and being able to interact with other information systems.”

A global transformation

For large international companies with global operations, implementing a single integrated solution to enable collaboration across regions while respecting regional variations can be a real challenge.

“We have 26,000 employees spread across a broad geography, with a variation in cultures and technological maturity. There was an aspiration to work in collaboration, but the necessary tools were not in place,” says FM Logistic’s Communication Manager. FM Logistic looked for a solution to enable new, more collaborative work practices, which were flexible in terms of usage and that, most importantly, would work as part of an integrated solution.

To do that, FM Logistic worked with Google Partner Devoteam G Cloud to implement G Suite alongside the LumApps intranet portal. It took six months to complete the migration of 7,000 accounts, with employees accessing the Business or Basic G Suite edition according to their needs. “Before, with our physical infrastructure we found ourselves buying additional hard drives as we ran out of storage,” says the Technical Project Manager at FM Logistic. “That’s no longer a problem, and we can tailor access depending on whether or not employees need unlimited storage .”

“It’s a real advantage to be able to access your account from any device and work from anywhere. Hangouts Meet has been really transformational in that respect: it has reduced the need for travel significantly, even in the few months we’ve been using it so far.”

– Communication Manager, FM Logistic

“We followed Google’s G Suite migration advice and had early adopter ambassadors in every country. By the time we got around to the final country, very little input was needed as they were ready to go!” says the Technical Project Manager. “Many of them were already familiar with the product, so it was very intuitive. Our feedback surveys gave a satisfaction rating of almost 4.5 out of 5 in relation to the transition. We also had significant executive support, with two members of the executive committee on the steering board. That really helped the project to move quickly.”

As a result, employees were quick to understand the benefits of the new system. “It’s a real advantage to be able to access your account from any device and work from anywhere. That was clear from the start,” says the Communication Manager. “Hangouts Meet has been really transformational in that respect: it has reduced the need for travel significantly, even in the few months we’ve been using it so far.”

LumApps: a fully-integrated enterprise hub

One of FM Logistic’s main reasons for choosing G Suite was the seamless integration with LumApps’ intranet portal. LumApps adds value to G Suite, thereby boosting and sustaining employee adoption. FM Logistic chose LumApps to create a hub for its enterprise, where everything is centralized from internal communications to business apps.

“We didn’t want a patchwork of solutions, we needed a platform that worked as an integral whole,” says the Technical Project Manager. “With LumApps, employees access the intranet using their Google authentication and can access all their G Suite tools through the intranet. Moreover, LumApps is Google native, so the integration is seamless and we know that it will evolve to accommodate any changes that might take place.”

“The main advantages we see are communication and knowledge sharing,” says the Communication Manager. “With LumApps, all 26,000 of our employees are now able to access the portal in their own language and access local news.”

For the next step, FM Logistic is considering integrating social communities so that employees can express themselves and be more engaged in the corporate culture.

Supporting digital maturity

Thanks to Drive, employees can now work from wherever they are, and are able to work more efficiently and more collaboratively. “From an administrative point of view, users can benefit from automatic updates, so there is less pressure on the IT department,” says the Technical Project Manager. “And we’re seeing many innovative uses of the tools to work in more efficient ways: many services have gone paperless with Forms, so less time is wasted; commercial agents are using Drive to work together on tenders simultaneously; and with Sheets, tasks are automatically sent from the team manager’s file to employee’s Calendar.”

“G Suite and LumApps are the first step of our digital transformation, in terms of collaboration and moving into the cloud. We have real confidence in our partners LumApps and Google, and we’re investing in those relationships for the long-term benefit of the company.”

– Communication Manager, FM Logistic

Now, FM Logistic wants to further support its employees in exploring all the tools G Suite has to offer. “We are embarking on a second phase to give our employees the skills they need for advanced uses of Docs, Sheets, and Forms,” says the Communication Manager. “It’s a learning curve, but it’s key to our goal of transforming our everyday processes.”

“G Suite and LumApps are the first step of our digital transformation, in terms of collaboration and moving into the cloud. We have real confidence in our partners LumApps and Google, and we’re investing in those relationships for the long-term benefit of the company.”
